Trinity College Dublin – Summer 2023: Taiwan/Ireland Poetry Translation Competition

We have an exciting programme of events lined up from September 2023, and details will be posted here in due course. If you would like to receive advance notice of these events, please complete the form at the bottom of this page, or email littrans@tcd.ie. We will not use your contact details for any other purpose.

Our Taiwan/Ireland Poetry Translation Competition is back! Each year, we invite anyone from around the world to join our Taiwan/Ireland Poetry Translation Competition. In our competitions, we explore the range of languages and traditions found in Taiwan, and discover how these can be linked to the poetry tradition of Ireland. This year’s poem is 天光 [Daylight] by 曾貴海 (Tseng Kuei-hai). It is written in the Hakka language (客家話), which originates in southern China, and is now spoken at home by around 7% of people in Taiwan. Once the competition closes, winning entries will be chosen by a panel of language and poetry experts. A set of winners will then join us for an online event to discuss the translation of this poem in December 2023.

The competition is open now, and the closing date is 1st September 2023.
