【About Lecture】
Examination of international politics often overlooks the essential role of translation in states’ effectively garnering understanding and support from global audiences for its position on various issues, including its wartime actions. In this talk I will discuss several examples in which the Japanese government has used translation strategically to address contested war memories from the Asia-Pacific War. I will also introduce the Japanese government’s recent effort to modify certain terms in the source language (Japanese) in order to yield desired translations that advance its narrative within the “history wars (rekishi-sen)”.
